These two colored cups were thrown on the wheel. First, the artist blends the colored clay making them into slabs. It's a matter of slicing the slab into long pieces. You then stack the sliced pieces on top of one another when you're building your cup on the wheel.
There's also this technique called "Hot Cross Buns." It's when you lay colored strips on top of white clay. Then when you throw it on the wheel, the colors will blend in with your cup.
We we can do this in our ceramics class. We just need several different colors of clay and white clay. Other than that, we already have the wheels and tools needed for this project.
